LSU Health Shreveport proudly announces Wendy K. Bernstein, MD, MBA, as the new Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Bernstein joins the institution from the Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, where she served as Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology, Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, and Director of Faculty Development.
A Leader in Academic Medicine
Dr. Bernstein is a distinguished educator, clinician, and leader with extensive experience in academic medicine. Her career highlights include:
- University of Rochester: As Professor and Vice Chair of Education, Dr. Bernstein introduced innovative training opportunities for residents and fellows, such as an Acute Pain Fellowship and a rural residency track in anesthesiology.
- University of Maryland: Over 18 years, she expanded the cardiac service line as Division Chief for Cardiac Anesthesia and Program Director for the Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship Program. She increased fellowship positions from two to three and developed a nationally recognized multidisciplinary simulation and team training program.
Dr. Bernstein’s expertise extends to team building, faculty development, and simulation-based education, for which she has gained national acclaim. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA) and the American Medical Women’s Association (FAMWA).
A Prolific Contributor to Anesthesiology
Dr. Bernstein’s contributions to the field include over 60 peer-reviewed articles, 19 book chapters, and 54 invited presentations at national and international conferences. She has held leadership roles in prominent organizations, including:
- Two terms on the Board of Directors for the American Medical Women’s Association.
- Service as an American Board of Anesthesiology examiner for the APPLIED Exam.
- Editorial Board member for the American Society of Anesthesiologists Computer-Based Education Program.
