WASHINGTON, D.C. – Speaker of the House Mike Johnson appeared on Fox & Friends this morning to discuss critical issues including the federal response to the recent New Orleans terror attack, border security under the Biden Administration, and the upcoming Speakership vote.
Federal Response to New Orleans Terror Attack
Speaker Johnson condemned the attack as “an act of pure evil” and emphasized the urgent need for justice. “This vicious attack on innocent Americans celebrating New Year’s is unacceptable,” Johnson stated. He expressed confidence in the ongoing collaboration between federal and state authorities, revealing that he had spoken late last night with Governor Jeff Landry and Attorney General Merrick Garland for updates.
“There are many FBI agents on the ground in New Orleans looking at every possible angle,” he noted. Johnson stressed the importance of partnership between federal and state authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice swiftly.
Criticism of Border Security Under the Biden Administration
Johnson criticized the Biden Administration for what he described as a failure to secure the U.S. border, linking it to potential national security threats. He accused the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of being “derelict in its duty,” highlighting concerns over the correlation between a porous border and the establishment of terrorist cells within the country.
“We have been ringing the alarms,” Johnson said. “This is why we passed H.R. 2, the strongest border security act ever passed by Congress, which the Senate, led by Chuck Schumer, refused to advance.” He argued that the administration’s priorities have been misplaced, resulting in “real consequences” for national security.
Speakership Vote and Republican Unity
As the House prepares for a pivotal Speakership vote tomorrow, Johnson expressed optimism about securing the necessary support to continue leading the chamber.
“We’re going to get this done,” Johnson said, referencing endorsements from President Donald Trump and leaders across the Republican Party. He emphasized the importance of Republican unity in addressing pressing issues, stating, “We live in very serious times. We cannot afford any palace drama here. We have to get immediately to work.”
The Speaker also pointed to the historic narrow margin in the House, noting the necessity of cohesive support. “We’ll have a margin of probably two votes tomorrow… but I think we’ll get it done. We’re shifting into a brand-new paradigm with unified government starting tomorrow.”
Delivering on the America First Agenda
Johnson reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the America First agenda with a focus on border security, national safety, and economic recovery. He expressed determination to capitalize on the Republican mandate following significant voter support in the 2024 elections.
“This begins on day one,” he said, highlighting the importance of the House’s role in certifying President Donald J. Trump’s election on January 6 and advancing legislative priorities.
