SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER, La. – Grambling State University and Langston University will face off in the first Shreveport Kickoff Classic on Aug. 30 at Independence Stadium, marking a new annual Labor Day weekend football tradition in Northwest Louisiana.
Local and state leaders said the event will celebrate HBCU heritage while delivering economic benefits through tourism and hospitality.
“We are deeply honored to welcome two proud HBCU institutions—Grambling State and Langston University—to Shreveport for the 2025 Shreveport Kickoff Classic,” said Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux. “This game not only ignites the spirit of competition on the field but also celebrates our city’s rich cultural legacy and commitment to community pride.”
Caddo Parish Commission President Stormy Gage-Watts said the matchup represents “a powerful tribute to tradition, excellence, and the enduring legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.”
Louisiana Rep. Steven Jackson, a Grambling alumnus, said the event revives a tradition of Grambling games in Shreveport and will provide “meaningful economic impact” for the region.
University leaders also voiced support. Grambling State President Martin Lemelle Jr. said the game will unite alumni, students and fans, while Langston University President Ruth Ray Jackson called it “a celebration of tradition and excellence.”
Visit Shreveport-Bossier President Stacy Brown said the game will highlight Independence Stadium as a sports venue and support local businesses.
The weekend includes a series of events leading up to the game:

- Saturday, Aug. 30 – Brunch En Blanc, hosted by the GUNAA Shreveport Alumni Chapter

- Saturday, Aug. 30 (evening) – Official Kickoff Classic Afterparty
- Sunday, Aug. 31 – All White Affair
- Sunday, Aug. 31 – 14th Annual Shreveport Blues & Southern Soul Pre-Labor Day Fest
