SHREVEPORT, LA – Willis Knighton Health, North Louisiana’s largest healthcare provider, has announced a new Firefighter Health Initiative in collaboration with the City of Shreveport, Bossier City, and fire districts across Caddo and Bossier parishes. This groundbreaking program will provide annual physicals and cancer screenings for approximately 1,500 active and retired firefighters, in compliance with the newly enacted LA Act 554.
The initiative, valued at $1,300 per firefighter, will be fully funded by Willis Knighton Health as part of its “tithe the bottom line” commitment to community service and public safety.
Comprehensive Health Screenings
Under the program, qualifying firefighters will receive state-mandated cancer screenings as well as annual physicals to monitor other key health metrics, including cardiovascular health, pulmonary function, and hearing ability. These services aim to identify potential health risks early, ensuring prompt and effective treatment.
“Firefighters face not only the immediate dangers of their work but also the invisible threat of long-term health issues like cancer caused by exposure to hazardous chemicals,” said Willis Knighton Health CEO Jaf Fielder. “This initiative goes beyond compliance with state law by offering comprehensive health evaluations to safeguard the well-being of these everyday heroes.”
Addressing Occupational Health Risks
The initiative aligns with LA Act 554, which was enacted earlier this year to require local governments to provide cancer screenings at no cost to firefighters. The legislation acknowledges the increased cancer risks faced by firefighters due to exposure to carcinogenic substances during emergency responses.
Firefighters responding to residential, vehicle, and commercial fires often encounter toxic chemicals that, over time, significantly increase the likelihood of developing cancer. Regular screenings are critical for early detection and improved outcomes.
Community Investment in Public Safety
Willis Knighton’s donation underscores its commitment to public safety and community health. The initiative not only supports firefighters’ physical health but also alleviates the financial burden on local governments required to comply with the new state law.
“This program represents a collaborative investment in the health and safety of those who risk their lives to protect our communities,” Fielder said. “By providing these services, we’re not just fulfilling a legislative mandate—we’re strengthening our commitment to the well-being of firefighters and their families.”
Looking Ahead
The Firefighter Health Initiative will roll out in 2025, coinciding with the implementation of LA Act 554. Local officials and firefighters have expressed gratitude for the program, which is expected to set a benchmark for firefighter health and wellness initiatives statewide.
