BATON ROUGE, La. — A new one-time scholarship established at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center will fully cover the law school costs for one student from northwest Louisiana in memory of late Shreveport attorney James R. Madison.
The James R. Madison Memorial Scholarship will provide up to $25,000 annually in tuition and fees for three years, covering the full cost of attendance for a single LSU Law student from Bossier, Caddo, DeSoto or Webster parishes.
All accepted first-year LSU Law students from the four parishes will be considered. Priority consideration will be given to eligible applicants who submit materials by March 1, 2026. Information about the admissions process is available through LSU Law admissions.
The scholarship was created with the intent of encouraging the recipient to return to northwest Louisiana to practice law following graduation, reflecting Madison’s own career path. Approximately 6% of LSU Law alumni currently practice in the Shreveport area.
Madison graduated from LSU Law in 1974 and later clerked for U.S. District Judge Ben C. Dawkins. He joined Wiener, Weiss & Madison in 1975 and spent his entire professional career with the firm. In addition to his legal work, Madison donated time to several community organizations, including Southfield School, the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, and Community Renewal.
“I never had the pleasure of meeting Jim Madison, but a few weeks ago, it was my privilege to announce this scholarship to a group of our alumni, many of whom knew him, and we are all proud to honor him,” said LSU Law Interim Dean Caprice Roberts.
