Seven residents in the Willis-Knighton Graduate Medical Education (GME) program have achieved a significant milestone by matching with their top-choice fellowship programs in their respective subspecialties. The achievement underscores the success of Willis-Knighton’s young GME program in preparing residents for highly competitive opportunities nationwide.
“These fellowship programs are extremely competitive, with internal medicine residents from across the country vying for a limited number of positions,” said Dr. Luke B. Nelson, director of the GME program. “The success of our residents exceeded expectations and speaks volumes about their dedication and the quality of our training program.”
Fellowship Matches
The following residents secured fellowships in prestigious programs:
- Dr. Sana Badar: Infectious Diseases, LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport
- Dr. Vivek Moorthy: Endocrinology/Research, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland
- Dr. Arpita Pawa: Cardiovascular Disease, Ochsner Clinic Foundation, New Orleans
- Dr. Natasha Santosh: Pulmonary/Critical Care, University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, Tampa, Florida

Understanding Fellowships
Match Day for fellowships, held annually in early December, marks an important moment for third-year internal medicine residents seeking advanced subspecialty training. Unlike residency, not every physician pursues a fellowship.
“A fellowship offers specialized training beyond residency, allowing physicians to focus on a specific area within their field,” Dr. Nelson explained. “It involves years of advanced study and practice under the mentorship of senior physicians, enabling fellows to become experts in their chosen subspecialty.”
A Bright Future for a Young Program
The success of Willis-Knighton’s internal medicine residents highlights the program’s commitment to excellence in medical education. The achievements of these residents not only bring pride to the institution but also strengthen its reputation as a training ground for future medical leaders.
