SHREVEPORT, La. — Southwestern Electric Power Co. has suspended residential disconnections for nonpayment through the end of the week as extreme heat continues across its service territory in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.
The utility said Aug. 17 that it is applying the temporary suspension across all three states despite differences in state rules governing weather-related disconnections and customer protections.
“Heat moratorium rules vary by state, but our commitment to our customers doesn’t,” said Paul Pratt, vice president of customer experience and new business development. “Across Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas, we’re taking this step because helping customers stay safe and comfortable during extreme heat comes first. During periods of extreme heat, we want customers to stay cool and know that resources are available if they need additional support.”
Customers will continue to accrue energy usage and charges while the disconnection suspension is in effect. SWEPCO encouraged customers concerned about future bills to monitor electricity usage through online accounts and smart meter tools and to contact the company about payment assistance and flexible payment arrangements.
The utility also recommended that customers stay hydrated, spend time in air-conditioned or other cool spaces when possible, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day and check on older adults and others who may be particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness.
SWEPCO said customers can access energy-saving programs, information about energy-efficient products and discounts through its Comfort + Savings program. Payment assistance programs, flexible payment arrangements and other bill-support resources are also available through the utility.
