SHREVEPORT, La. — The City of Shreveport will begin accepting applications Oct. 1 for a $1.8 million housing rehabilitation program aimed at helping low- to moderate-income homeowners make critical repairs to their properties.
The city’s Department of Community Development will administer the funding, which was awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The money will support repairs including plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems, roofs and accessibility improvements.
Funding will be allocated based on need. To qualify, applicants must own the home, use it as their primary residence, meet income requirements and have insurance on the property.
“Helping people remain safely in their homes is one of the most meaningful ways we can strengthen our neighborhoods,” Mayor Tom Arceneaux said. “This funding will allow us to address serious repair needs that can become overwhelming for homeowners, from roofs and plumbing to HVAC and accessibility improvements. I’m grateful that we can put these resources to work for Shreveport families and help preserve both their homes and the stability of our communities.”
The funding comes through the federal Community Development Block Grant program.
“The need for affordable housing has reached critical levels across the country,” Community Development Director Verni Howard said. “The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding will allow us to help low to moderate income homeowners to preserve their homes and to live with dignity.”
Applications will be available beginning Oct. 1 through the City of Shreveport’s website. Paper applications will also be available at Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation locations throughout the city.
