What’s Driving the Increase?
According to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, rising crude oil prices and improving economic sentiment are behind the upward pressure on prices.
“Gasoline prices jumped in over three-quarters of U.S. states over the last week,” said De Haan. “Former President Trump’s decision to reduce tariffs and strike new trade deals inspired optimism that a major tariff-induced economic slowdown might be avoided.”
While the gap in gas prices compared to last year has narrowed, De Haan says this summer is still shaping up to be one of the most affordable for road trips since the pandemic, especially when adjusting for inflation.
GasBuddy is expected to release its 2025 summer travel survey and seasonal price forecast in the coming days.
