What’s Keeping Prices Low?
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, attributed the lower-than-expected prices to uncertainty over tariffs and economic concerns.
“The average price of gasoline in the U.S. hasn’t been this low in March since 2021, when the pandemic significantly reduced demand,” said De Haan. “This time, caution over tariffs and uncertainty in the economy are playing a role. OPEC+ has also announced plans to gradually restore oil production, which is keeping downward pressure on prices.”
Despite the seasonal trend of rising fuel costs in spring, De Haan noted that this year’s increase—if it happens—could be smaller than usual.
