New Economic Impact Report Highlights Jobs, Tax Revenue, and Regional Growth Opportunities
Baton Rouge, La. — A newly released 2025 economic impact study commissioned by the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association (LMOGA) confirms the continued dominance of the oil and gas sector in Louisiana’s post-pandemic recovery and overall economy. The comprehensive report, conducted by economist Dr. Stephen Barnes, shows the energy industry now supports 25% of Louisiana’s total economic output, 15% of jobs, and nearly 20% of all earnings across the state.
“Energy remains a strong pillar of our state economy,” said Tommy Faucheux, President of LMOGA. “With over 300,000 Louisianians connected to this industry, the dollars we generate fund real priorities—from roads and law enforcement to teacher pay.”
Key Statewide Findings (FY2024):
- 306,750 energy-related jobs (15% of all employment)
- $25.5 billion in total annual earnings (19% of statewide income)
- $77.7 billion in added value (25% of the state’s total economy)
- $974 million paid in specific state taxes
- $1.1 billion in local property taxes
- $3.48 billion contributed to state taxes, licenses, and fees (20.4% of the total)
Regional Economic Super Hubs
The study highlights four energy super regions that together account for over 90% of the industry’s economic activity:
River Corridor (Baton Rouge–New Orleans):
- 134,654 jobs
- $11.4 billion in earnings
- $39.1 billion in local economic value
Bayou Region (Lafayette–Houma):
- 62,485 jobs
- $4.7 billion in earnings
- $9.7 billion in value
Southwest Louisiana:
- 26,620 jobs
- $2.3 billion in earnings
- $8.9 billion in value
Northwest Louisiana:
- 27,236 jobs
- $2.1 billion in earnings
- $9.9 billion in value
Additionally, the study found that up to 31.3% of local property taxes and 19.4% of local sales taxes in these regions were generated by the energy sector.
Looking Ahead: Growth and Innovation
Dr. Barnes emphasized that emerging technologies and shifting global demand offer new growth opportunities for Louisiana’s energy sector.
“The modern energy sector will continue to play a vital role in sustaining Louisiana’s economy,” Barnes writes. “Capitalizing on these opportunities could position the state as a leader in the global energy transition.”
LMOGA plans to share the findings broadly, with President Faucheux traveling across the state to engage with local government, business leaders, and community groups. The organization also hopes the data will inform policymaking during the current Legislative Session.
“This report is further proof that our brightest future is built by supporting Louisiana’s energy workers and innovators,” Faucheux added.
