BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has signed a package of election-related legislation aimed at strengthening voter verification procedures, improving voter registration list maintenance and increasing protections for voter information.
The measures, supported by Secretary of State Nancy Landry and approved by the Louisiana Legislature during the 2026 session, include Senate Bill 319, House Bill 691 and House Bill 547.
Senate Bill 319, now Act 5 of the 2026 Louisiana Legislature, establishes statewide standards for voter identification at polling locations. The law outlines acceptable forms of identification and voter verification procedures for election officials. The measure is scheduled to take effect July 1, 2027.
House Bill 691, now Act 6, formalizes Louisiana’s use of the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, or SAVE, program to review voter registration records for potential noncitizen registrations. The law requires annual reviews of voter rolls while maintaining procedures designed to provide due process before any registration is removed. The legislation takes effect Aug. 1, 2026.
House Bill 547, now Act 163, prohibits the photographing, recording or reproduction of certain voter registration information contained in Election Day precinct registers. State officials said the measure is intended to strengthen privacy protections and reduce the risk of misuse of voter data.
Secretary of State Nancy Landry said the legislation is designed to enhance election administration and voter confidence by strengthening identity verification procedures, maintaining accurate voter registration records and protecting personal information.
The package received support from election integrity advocacy groups, including Honest Elections Project Action and Heritage Action, whose leaders praised the voter identification provisions included in Senate Bill 319.
Louisiana election officials said the new laws build on previous election security initiatives and are intended to further standardize election procedures across the state.
