GRAMBLING, La. — Grambling State University has obtained federal trademark registration for its longstanding “G” logo, securing protection under U.S. Trademark Registration No. 8148992.
The stylized “G” has been associated with the university’s athletic programs and institutional identity since the 1970s. A prior attempt to register the mark in 1998 was declined because of perceived conflicts with other collegiate and professional marks featuring the letter “G.”
The registration was secured with assistance from the intellectual property team at Kean Miller. The firm worked with the university to address earlier refusals and respond to concerns raised by the examining attorney at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Through revisions to the application and legal arguments aimed at mitigating likelihood-of-confusion issues, the university demonstrated the distinctiveness of its logo and its longstanding association with the institution.
“This registration marks the culmination of years of effort and perseverance,” said Devin Ricci, intellectual property partner at Kean Miller who led the initiative. “We appreciate the trust Grambling placed in us to bring this to a successful resolution.”
University officials said the federal registration strengthens Grambling’s ability to protect its brand, expand licensing opportunities and enforce its rights related to the logo.
