SHREVEPORT, La. – April 2025
With spring’s arrival in full bloom, residents across the Ark-La-Tex are enjoying longer days and warmer weather—but for many, it also marks the return of seasonal allergies. CHRISTUS Health is stepping up to offer practical advice and timely tips to help residents manage their symptoms and stay productive during peak allergy months.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 25% of Americans—approximately 80 million people—suffer from seasonal allergies. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to reactions that significantly disrupt daily life and work routines.
“Allergy symptoms can persist year-round depending on where you live,” said Dr. Susan Kemp, a family medicine physician with CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic. “The key is to take a proactive approach to managing symptoms before they worsen.”
Dr. Kemp advises patients to begin treatment early in the season with options such as nasal steroid sprays (like Flonase or Nasonex) or oral antihistamines (such as Claritin, Allegra, or Zyrtec). Recognizing symptoms early can help avoid complications, especially for individuals balancing busy work and family lives.
Allergies vs. Colds: Spotting the Difference
“One of the biggest challenges we see is distinguishing between allergy symptoms and a cold,” Kemp explained. “Both may present with congestion, sneezing, itchy throat, and a runny nose, but a cold typically includes a fever and resolves in a few days. Allergy symptoms, on the other hand, tend to linger.”
For those dealing with mild symptoms, Kemp recommends over-the-counter treatments such as nasal corticosteroids, saline rinses, and even local honey. Decongestants may also help, but individuals with chronic health conditions should consult their healthcare providers before adding new medications.
When to See a Provider
CHRISTUS Health emphasizes that anyone experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms that interfere with daily activities should not hesitate to seek medical advice.
“Allergy season can feel never-ending,” said Kemp. “But our goal is to help patients find the relief they need so they can enjoy the season without suffering.”
As allergy season ramps up across Northwest Louisiana, local employers and professionals are encouraged to be proactive in managing symptoms to maintain workplace productivity and personal well-being.
