WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy on Thursday introduced the Improving IRS Customer Service Act, legislation aimed at expanding taxpayer access to information and improving service at the Internal Revenue Service.
Cassidy said the bill would streamline interactions with the IRS by increasing transparency around refunds and providing additional support for taxpayers managing payment plans.
“Taxpayers deserve a simple, stress-free experience when dealing with the IRS,” Cassidy said. “This bill makes the process quicker and easier for taxpayers to get the information they need.”
During a Senate Finance Committee hearing, Cassidy said Frank Bisignano, nominated by President Donald Trump to lead the IRS, committed to working with Congress to implement the proposed reforms if enacted.
“I’m happy to meet with the team … and do all I can to make it as good as you want it to be,” Bisignano said.
The legislation includes provisions to create an online dashboard displaying processing backlogs and wait times, expand electronic access to tax information and refunds, and enhance callback technology and online account features. It also would require the IRS to provide more information on collection alternatives for taxpayers facing economic hardship.
Cassidy introduced the bill with Mark Warner, a Democrat, signaling bipartisan support for the measure.
