House Speaker Mike Johnson appeared on Fox & Friends to discuss the Republican strategy behind the recently proposed short-term continuing resolution (CR), aimed at preventing a government shutdown while setting the stage for a Republican-led agenda in 2025. Johnson emphasized that the measure clears the way for substantial fiscal reforms and a return to the “America First” policies under a Republican-controlled Congress and White House.
Setting the Stage for Change
“This short-term funding measure is not just about avoiding a costly shutdown,” Johnson explained. “It’s about positioning Congress and the next administration, led by President Trump, to take the reins in March 2025. By delaying spending decisions until Republicans have full control, we can enact policies that align with our conservative principles and national priorities.”
The CR extends funding through March 14, 2025, bypassing the potential for an omnibus spending package during the holiday season.
Emergency Funding for Hurricanes and Farmers
Johnson highlighted the inclusion of $100 billion in emergency funding for disaster relief following a historic hurricane season, which caused widespread damage across six states. Additionally, the measure addresses urgent financial needs for farmers and ranchers grappling with inflation and economic challenges.
“Our small farmers and ranchers, vital to America’s food supply, are at risk of permanent financial ruin,” Johnson said. “This isn’t just about agriculture; it’s about national security. Without these producers, our domestic food supply is in jeopardy.”
The relief package also includes support for creditors and lenders critical to the agricultural sector, addressing what Johnson called an unprecedented crisis in rural America.
Fiscal Responsibility and DOGE Initiatives
Johnson reiterated his commitment to reducing government size and inefficiency through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative involving industry leaders such as Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.
“I’ve been in constant communication with Elon and Vivek about these efforts,” Johnson said. “They understand the challenges we face, and together, we’re paving the way for transformational changes that will take effect in 2025.”
Looking Ahead to 2025
With Republicans poised to take full control of Congress and the White House in January, Johnson expressed optimism about the party’s ability to implement sweeping reforms.
“By clearing the decks now, we’re ensuring that 2025 starts with a clear path for the America First agenda,” Johnson stated. “From fiscal responsibility to securing our food supply, the Republican vision for the future will soon take center stage.”
Next Steps
As the continuing resolution moves forward, Johnson urged fiscal conservatives to focus on the long-term benefits of the strategy. “We’re playing the long game,” he said. “Come March, Republicans will have the opportunity to shape spending decisions that reflect our priorities and values.”
