BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. — Air Force Global Strike Command officials said multiple unauthorized drone incursions occurred over Barksdale Air Force Base beginning March 9, prompting a temporary shelter-in-place order and an ongoing federal investigation.
According to a statement released Tuesday, base leadership issued the precautionary order on the morning of March 9 following initial drone activity. The order was lifted later the same day. Officials said base operations have continued without disruption.
The incursions, described as varying in duration and number of drones, remain under investigation by federal authorities. The statement did not specify the origin of the drones or whether any individuals have been identified.
The command said it is contributing to a broader, coordinated federal response to counter small unmanned aircraft system threats. Efforts include internal development of training and operational solutions aimed at protecting sensitive military assets, including intercontinental ballistic missile fields, weapons storage areas and bomber operations.
Officials added that additional counter-drone capabilities have been temporarily deployed, though specific details and locations were not disclosed due to operational security concerns.
