WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.) voted to approve the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which includes several provisions supporting Louisiana’s military installations, shipyards, and medical readiness programs.
“The Schumer Shutdown is harming families and denying our troops their pay,” Cassidy said. “That’s why Republicans are working to strengthen our defense, support Louisiana’s military bases, and protect our troops.”
The NDAA includes more than $20 million in funding for projects at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier Parish. That total includes $18 million for construction and modernization of weapons generation facilities and dormitories, and $2.2 million to design a new Child Development Center aimed at expanding on-base family care and reducing waitlists.
The legislation also establishes the Military–Civilian Medical Surge Program as a permanent program of record, building on previous funding secured by Cassidy. The initiative includes LSU Health Shreveport as a National Disaster Medical System pilot site, enhancing collaboration among LSUHS, Barksdale Air Force Base, and the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center to strengthen Louisiana’s disaster and medical response capabilities.
In addition, the defense package increases authorizations for shipbuilding and amphibious fleet programs, bolstering Louisiana shipyards and the state’s role in supporting the nation’s maritime defense industrial base.
