BATON ROUGE, LA – The Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) is reminding residents about a free online tool that helps locate lost or unclaimed life insurance policies after the death of a loved one.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Life Insurance Policy Locator connects consumers with life insurance policies that may have been forgotten or are unknown to beneficiaries. Each year, millions of dollars in life insurance benefits go unclaimed because heirs are unaware of existing policies or cannot locate documentation.
How the Life Insurance Policy Locator Works
The NAIC’s secure and confidential tool allows users to submit a request for a policy search across all 50 states. Since its launch in 2016, the tool has received over 886,727 requests and has helped claim 460,952 life insurance policies and annuities worth over $10 billion.
If a match is found, the information is forwarded to the appropriate insurance companies, which are then responsible for contacting beneficiaries.
Who Can Use the Service?
This service is available to the public, including:
- Beneficiaries
- Legal representatives
- Estate executors
Information Required to Submit a Request
To conduct a search, requestors must provide:
- The deceased’s full legal name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth and date of death
- A copy of the death certificate
- Their relationship to the deceased
Requests can take up to 90 business days to process. If no policy is found or if the requester is not the beneficiary, they will not receive a response.
How to Access the Policy Locator
The NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator is available through the Louisiana Department of Insurance website. To use the tool:
- Visit the policy locator website.
- Enter your personal details (name and address).
- Submit a request with the deceased’s information (from the death certificate).
- Confirm your relationship to the deceased.
- Submit your request to the secure, encrypted database.
- If a policy is found, the insurance provider will contact you directly.
