Honoring Veterans, Military, and First Responders While Partnering with Love One Louisiana Foundation
NEW ORLEANS – Washington Mardi Gras King Rico Alvendia and Chairman Congressman Troy Carter have announced the 2025 theme, “Duty, Honor, Louisiana,” a tribute to America’s veterans, active-duty military, and first responders. The Mystick Krewe of Louisianans will use this year’s festivities to highlight the unwavering dedication of these heroes while showcasing Louisiana’s vibrant culture.
The theme resonates deeply as Washington Mardi Gras coincides with the week of the presidential inauguration, providing a timely platform to celebrate unity and gratitude for the United States armed forces.
A Celebration of Service and Unity
As part of the festivities, King Alvendia will host a USO concert featuring a major country music artist, performances by the acclaimed West Point Band, and local bands from Edna Karr and L.B. Landry high schools. The concert will honor service members and their families, fostering unity regardless of political affiliation.
“As an Iraq War veteran, I’ve always sought ways to give back to my country and fellow veterans,” said King Rico Alvendia. “Mardi Gras offers a unique opportunity to celebrate both our local culture and our heroes. This year’s USO concert is a chance to bring everyone together in love for our country and gratitude for its defenders.”
Recognizing New Orleans Police Heroes
In a special gesture, the Love One Louisiana Foundation, led by Louisiana First Lady Sharon Landry, will sponsor the participation of New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) officers in this year’s Washington Mardi Gras festivities. This recognition comes in light of the officers’ heroic actions following the tragic terrorist attack in New Orleans earlier this year.
“King Rico’s theme offers a meaningful opportunity to honor the bravery and dedication of local heroes who risk their lives daily to protect our communities,” said First Lady Sharon Landry. “We are proud to celebrate their service and courage during this year’s events.”
Mars Hero Fund: Supporting America’s Heroes
To further embody this year’s theme, the 2025 King’s chosen charity is the Mars Hero Fund, a nonprofit supporting active-duty military, veterans, and first responders. The fund covers expenses for participants in the Legion of Mars Parade, hosts a Veterans Day meal at the New Orleans VA hospital, and engages in other charitable initiatives.
“This year, we’re inviting everyone to join us in celebrating the people who protect our lives and freedoms,” Alvendia added. “While no recognition can fully repay their sacrifices, the Mars Hero Fund helps ensure our heroes and their families receive the support they need.”
