(The Center Square) – U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson won reelection Tuesday but acknowledged Republicans had fallen short of retaining their House majority, telling supporters in Shreveport that his party faced a difficult challenge going into midterms.
Johnson, who has represented Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District since 2017, acknowledged the difficulties Republicans faced in holding their majority during his election night party in Shreveport.
“From the first day of this election, we knew that to keep the House and sustain our majority, we would have to defy more than a century of midterm history,” Johnson said. “So it happened twice in 90 years that a sitting president has picked up or held seats for his party at that first two-year cycle. There’s a lot of reasons for it. It’s very, very difficult to overcome.”
Republicans lost congressional races in North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Kentucky, where Democratic wins helped shift control of the House. Democrats needed just three seats to reclaim the majority.
Johnson warned that Americans would suffer if Democrats spent the next two years pursuing investigations and partisan battles instead of addressing the country’s problems.
Johnson promised that House Republicans would push back against Democrats if they used their new majority to pursue what he described as “political retaliation.”
“We will put a firewall of House Republicans standing in their way to ensure that doesn’t happen,” Johnson said.
Johnson said Republicans still had work to finish before the current Congress ends, highlighting that the election results would not change the GOP’s priorities during its remaining weeks in control of the House.
He defended the GOP’s record in Congress, touting tax cuts, reduced federal spending and border security measures as major accomplishments during their time in control.
Johnson said the election results would not stop Republicans from pushing their agenda. He promised to challenge Democrats over the next two years as the party works to regain control of the House in 2028.
