Shreveport, Louisiana – Milam Street, a historic thoroughfare in downtown Shreveport, is set to undergo a transformation honoring the legendary guitarist James Burton. The two-block stretch from Common to Austin Place will be dedicated to Burton, now known as James Burton Way, in recognition of his immense contributions to the music industry and his roots in Shreveport. The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Friday, April 12, 2024, at 4 p.m. at the northwest corner of Milam Street at Elvis Presley Avenue.

Mayor Tom Arceneaux will declare April 12th as James Burton Day during the ceremony, presenting a proclamation acknowledging Burton’s impact on the entertainment industry. The event promises to be a poignant celebration of Burton’s legacy and his enduring connection to Shreveport.

Burton’s journey as a musician began in his hometown, where he discovered his passion for music at an early age. Recalling his humble beginnings, Burton reminisced about stumbling upon his first guitar at J&S Music on Milam Street. “It was the most important guitar in the world for me,” he reflected. “And still today, I love that guitar.”

His talent and dedication quickly propelled him into the professional realm, leading to collaborations with iconic artists such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Dale Hawkins. Notably, Burton’s distinctive guitar riff on “Suzie Q” remains a timeless classic, showcasing his innovative style and musical prowess.

In addition to his illustrious career, Burton’s philanthropic efforts have left an indelible mark on communities worldwide. In 2005, he founded the James Burton Foundation, dedicated to providing guitars to children in school systems, veterans, and hospitalized children across the United States and Europe. Through initiatives like the James Burton International Guitar Festival, the foundation has empowered countless young musicians to pursue their musical dreams.

Burton’s contributions have garnered widespread recognition, earning him induction into esteemed institutions such as the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, The Musicians Hall of Fame, and The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. His enduring influence on the music industry and his unwavering commitment to philanthropy underscore his status as a true icon.
