LSU Health Shreveport Celebrates Research Achievements at 6th Annual Research Celebration

LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS) marked another year of research milestones and achievements at its 6th Annual Research Celebration, held on Thursday, February 15. The event, open to members of the community, LSUHS employees, and students, showcased the institution’s progress and contributions to the field of medical research.

Among the highlights shared at the event were the significant achievements of LSU Health Shreveport’s Office for Research over the past year:

  • Extramural Grant Funding: LSU Health Shreveport secured over $23 million in extramural grant funding during fiscal year 2023, with an additional $20 million awarded in fiscal year 2024 to date. These grants provide critical support for ongoing research initiatives and projects at the institution.
  • Clinical Trials: The institution conducted more than 100 clinical trials, demonstrating a commitment to advancing medical knowledge and treatment options. LSUHS also achieved distinction as the top site for participant enrollment in two national studies: the Surgical Timing and Rehabilitation Trial for Multiple Ligament Knee Injuries (STaR) and the Black and African American Connections to Parkinson’s Disease (BLAAC-PD) study.
  • New Grants and Collaborations: LSU Health Shreveport announced new grants and collaborations slated to commence in 2024, underscoring its dedication to pursuing cutting-edge research endeavors.
  • Facility Tour: Attendees had the opportunity to tour the Center of Excellence for Emerging Viral Threats, which houses state-of-the-art BSL-2, BSL-3, and training laboratories within the new Center for Medical Education. These facilities play a vital role in advancing research on infectious diseases and preparing future healthcare professionals.

In addition to recognizing the institution’s collective achievements, LSU Health Shreveport honored individuals for their outstanding contributions to research excellence:

  • Excellence in Extramural Funding: Quanguang Zhang, PhD
  • Excellence in Translational Research: Elizabeth Disbrow, PhD
  • Excellence in Innovation: Arrigo De Benedetti, PhD
  • Research Rising Star: Krista Rodgers, PhD
  • Community Champion: Mr. W. Clinton “Bubba” Rasberry, Jr.

Furthermore, Dr. Sushil Jain received the Career Service Award in recognition of his remarkable 42+ years of dedicated service to LSU Health Shreveport and his significant contributions to the field of science.
