SHREVEPORT, La. — United Way of Northwest Louisiana will launch its “Year of Dolly” on Friday, Sept. 25, with events focused on Dolly Parton’s legacy and her support for children’s literacy.
The Dolly Day activities will include a special screening of “9 to 5” at Robinson Film Center and the illumination of the Bakowski Bridge of Lights in pink. Two Shreveport Smoothie King locations also will offer a special Dolly Smoothie for the day.
Caddo Parish will recognize Sept. 25 as Dolly Parton’s Day in recognition of Parton’s contributions to music, philanthropy and literacy.
The events also will highlight Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free, age-appropriate books to enrolled children. More than 7,000 children in Northwest Louisiana currently receive a book each month through the program, according to United Way.
Robinson Film Center is holding a Remembering Dolly Book Drive through Sept. 30. The organization is collecting new children’s books for students at J.S. Clark, Magnolia Charter School, Caddo Heights Math/Science Elementary School and Atkins Elementary.
Dolly Day’s “9 to 5” screening at Robinson Film Center will begin with a cocktail hour and light hors d’oeuvres at 5 p.m., followed by the movie at 6 p.m. Registration is required because seating is limited. A special announcement is planned following the screening.
After the movie, the Bakowski Bridge of Lights on Texas Street will be illuminated in pink as part of the celebration.
United Way said Dolly Day will begin a yearlong series of activities supporting children and literacy through the Imagination Library. The initiative also will be incorporated into Day of Caring, the organization’s annual volunteer event, with additional activities expected to be announced during the year.
