SHREVEPORT, LA — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) held a press conference on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Shreveport Regional Airport to emphasize the urgency of obtaining REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses ahead of the federal deadline on May 7, 2025.
Starting in May 2025, travelers will need a REAL ID or another federally approved form of identification, such as a passport, to board domestic flights or access secure federal facilities.
OMV Commissioner Dan Casey and TSA spokesperson Sari Koshetz urged Louisiana residents to act now to avoid last-minute rushes or travel disruptions.
“All Louisiana residents planning to fly next year and beyond should prioritize getting a REAL ID license or ID card,” Casey said. He outlined the required documentation, which includes a U.S. passport or birth certificate and two pieces of mail verifying residency. Residents are encouraged to visit the OMV website for a complete list of requirements and step-by-step instructions.
REAL ID-compliant licenses are easily identifiable by a star in the upper-right corner, signifying they meet federal security standards. After the May 2025 deadline, non-compliant licenses will no longer be accepted for domestic air travel or entry into secure federal facilities.
Enhanced Airport Security Measures
Koshetz also highlighted new security advancements at Shreveport Regional Airport, including the deployment of Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2) machines.

“These machines allow passengers to insert their license directly into the device, which will verify their identity using embedded security features,” Koshetz explained. “The machine takes a real-time photo to confirm you’re the person on the ID. The photo is not saved but ensures that only authorized individuals are boarding flights.”
She added that TSA plans to enable these machines to accept mobile driver’s licenses as early as next year, further enhancing the passenger experience.
May 2025 Deadline Looms
With less than six months remaining, Casey and Koshetz stressed the importance of early action to avoid delays and ensure compliance.
“May 2025 will be here before we know it,” Koshetz said. “Taking care of this now ensures you’re prepared and won’t face any unexpected travel interruptions.”
Louisiana residents can upgrade to a REAL ID at any OMV field office. Detailed instructions and documentation checklists are available on the OMV website.
How to Get a REAL ID
To obtain a REAL ID-compliant license, residents must present:
- Proof of identity (e.g., a U.S. passport or birth certificate)
- Two proofs of residency (e.g., utility bills or bank statements)
