Louisiana is seeing some of the highest flu rates in the country, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Healthcare providers statewide report an uptick in flu cases and other respiratory illnesses.
With just weeks remaining until Christmas and the start of Hanukkah, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana encourages residents to get their flu shots and other seasonal vaccines. Vaccination can help prevent the spread of illnesses during holiday gatherings and travel. By getting vaccinated now, individuals can also ensure protection during the peak of respiratory illness season this winter.
CDC Vaccine Recommendations
The CDC advises that everyone six months and older receive an annual flu shot. This is especially important for those at higher risk of severe complications or death from the flu, including:
- Adults 65 and older
- Pregnant individuals
- Babies and young children
- People with chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, or heart disease
Additionally, the CDC recommends the 2024-2025 updated COVID-19 vaccine for everyone six months and older to protect against circulating variants. The agency also suggests the RSV vaccine for:
- Individuals 75 and older
- People ages 60–74 at increased risk for severe RSV
- Pregnant individuals, as the vaccine may help protect their babies from RSV
If you’re unsure about which vaccines you or your family need, consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for personalized guidance.
