SHREVEPORT, La. — A communications system developed by Shreveport-based Outerlink Global Solutions is now supporting B-52 training and operations, advancing a local defense technology effort that secured a $26 million contract in 2023.
Air Force Global Strike Command recently announced the fielding of IRIS, a prototype designed to help bomber crews communicate across long distances. The system combines satellite communications equipment with aircraft and ground components.
According to the command, multiple IRIS kits had been installed on aircraft and delivered to the 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron by April 1. The system remains a prototype, with further testing and evaluation planned as the Air Force considers long-term communications solutions for the bomber.
BRF said it and its Entrepreneurial Accelerator Program supported the effort through the Commercial Capabilities Integration and Transition initiative, helping connect commercial technology with Air Force modernization needs.
The project’s development included a June 2022 flight demonstration at Barksdale Air Force Base. The 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron conducted the demonstration, while personnel from the 608th Air Operations Center assessed the transfer of voice, data, images and video from the aircraft.
Air Force Global Strike Command subsequently used an AFWERX Small Business Innovation Research Phase II contract to advance integration of Outerlink’s commercial technology onto the B-52.
In 2023, the effort transitioned to a $26 million Strategic Funding Increase contract, the first such contract designated to the command.
The B-52 System Program Office, the 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron and personnel from the 307th Bomb Wing contributed technical expertise and operational guidance during development.
Ground and flight testing in March 2026 demonstrated the connectivity needed to support operational use, according to the command.
For northwest Louisiana, the announcement marks another step in a collaboration connecting a Shreveport technology company, regional business development support and military organizations at Barksdale.
