SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER, LA – The Shreveport-Bossier Military Affairs Council (MAC) has unveiled the Currency of Caring Program, a new initiative aimed at reducing food insecurity among junior enlisted airmen and military families stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base (BAFB). Launching on November 12, 2024, the program offers meal tokens redeemable at participating local restaurants: Jacquelyn’s Café, Rhino Coffee, and Marilynn’s Place.
Each token guarantees recipients a complete meal—entrée, side, and drink—served with dignity, no questions asked.
Supporting Military Readiness and Resilience
The program addresses a critical issue affecting military personnel nationwide: food insecurity. A recent Pentagon study revealed that approximately 25.8% of U.S. military personnel struggle to access healthy food, with 15.4% of those being active-duty service members.
“The MAC is excited to introduce this program to support our airmen and their families,” said Trey Giglio, President & CEO of the Shreveport-Bossier Military Affairs Council. “Currency of Caring not only provides meals with dignity but also strengthens the bond between our military and local community.”
A Community Effort
By participating in the Currency of Caring Program, local restaurants gain exposure while offering crucial support to military personnel. The program helps alleviate the stigma around seeking assistance, fostering a stronger sense of community and mental well-being among service members.
“We thank the local restaurants for their commitment and encourage more to join,” said Robert Tibi, Executive Director of MAC. “This program allows community members to directly support our military families, reducing stress and helping airmen remain mission-focused.”
How to Get Involved
The Shreveport-Bossier Military Affairs Council invites additional restaurants and community members to join the Currency of Caring Program. Contributions can be made through monetary donations or volunteer efforts.
