BOSSIER CITY, LA – Mark Hux, a long-serving ESL instructor at Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC), has been named the 2024 Outstanding Local Excellence in Advocacy by the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE). Hux received this prestigious national recognition during COABE’s annual conference, held March 31–April 2 in Dallas, Texas.
With 15 years of dedicated service in BPCC’s College Transition Department, Hux has become a leading voice in adult education advocacy, both within Louisiana and across the nation. His commitment to empowering adult learners through literacy, language proficiency, and workforce readiness has been a defining feature of his career.
In addition to his teaching role, Hux currently serves as president of the Louisiana Association for Public Community and Adult Education (LAPCAE). He recently concluded his term as a COABE State Advocate for Adult Education Fellowship (SAAEF) and is now serving a one-year term in COABE’s State Association Leadership Initiative (SALI), continuing his efforts to strengthen and expand access to adult education across the state.
“There is so much work to do in Louisiana to prepare adults for today’s workplace,” Hux said. “So many working-age adults in our state face barriers—whether it’s reading, math, technology, language, or soft skills. Our programs empower adult learners and help them build a brighter future.”
Hux’s recognition reflects not only his personal dedication but also the broader impact of BPCC’s College Transition Programs. These programs, which are free to all adults, offer essential training in literacy, numeracy, digital literacy, and workplace skills. They serve as a vital resource for those seeking to improve their employability, continue their education, or better support their families.
“The experiences I had as a SAAEF fellow will open doors for our students, and that is what motivates me—to not only strive for my success, but for their success as well,” Hux added.
BPCC’s College Transition Programs play a critical role in the region’s workforce development strategy, helping address the skills gap and ensuring that more adults are prepared to meet the demands of a modern economy.
