Shreveport, La. – LSU Health Shreveport’s School of Medicine is gearing up for its annual “Geaux Bald” Shave Day on Thursday, March 6, a fundraising event that encourages students, faculty, and community members to shave or cut their hair in support of Feist-Weiller Cancer Center (FWCC) patients.
The event, organized by Geaux Bald, a second-year medical student-led initiative founded in 2011, began as a tribute to a beloved faculty member diagnosed with cancer. Over the years, the initiative has grown into a major fundraising effort benefiting patients and families receiving cancer treatment at FWCC.
Fundraising for McDade House Renovation
This year, proceeds from Shave Day will contribute to the renovation of McDade House, a hospitality home for FWCC patients and their families. Originally opened in 1985 as one of the first hospitality houses in the nation, McDade House provides a “home away from home” for cancer patients who must travel long distances for treatment. With nearly 50% of FWCC patients commuting more than 20 miles for care, the reopening of McDade House will help ease the burden of extended stays.
