SHREVEPORT, La. – LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS) has earned continued accreditation with no citations from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)—a significant achievement that reaffirms the institution’s commitment to training the next generation of physicians.
The ACGME is the national accrediting body responsible for overseeing residency and fellowship programs across the United States. Its standards are designed to ensure that physicians receive the high-quality training necessary to deliver safe and effective patient care.
Residency and fellowship programs, collectively known as graduate medical education (GME), represent the critical period of hands-on training that follows graduation from medical school. To maintain accreditation, institutions must annually demonstrate compliance with rigorous requirements, including financial compensation for residents, access to support services, and a collaborative work and education environment.
“Thank you to all who teach, heal, and discover to train our residents and fellows in graduate medical education—the formative years of training following medical school,” said James D. Morris, MD, FACG, FACP, AGAF, FASGE, Designated Institutional Official at LSUHS. “Thank you to the staff in the GME Office, Program Directors, and Program Administrators for their commitment to ensuring a quality training environment for our trainees.”
LSU Health Shreveport currently offers 44 ACGME-accredited programs, with plans to add separately accredited Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine residencies. The institution supports more than 600 residents and fellows during the 2024-2025 academic year and boasts more than 5,000 alumni from its graduate medical education programs. LSUHS remains the largest provider of graduate medical education in North and Central Louisiana.
Nationwide, ACGME accredited 13,393 residency and fellowship programs during the 2023-2024 academic year, representing 905 sponsoring institutions and more than 162,000 active residents and fellows.
