Baton Rouge, La. — The Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) has unanimously approved the sale of CenterPoint Energy’s Louisiana natural gas utilities to Delta Utilities, a New Orleans-based natural gas utility. The decision, announced Wednesday, paves the way for Delta Utilities to acquire and operate CenterPoint’s regulated natural gas systems, which serve approximately 245,000 customers across north and south Louisiana.
The sale, initially proposed in April 2024, is expected to close in March 2025, pending fulfillment of additional conditions. Until then, CenterPoint customers will see no changes to their service or billing, with no action required on their part.
A Reliable Energy Future
“Delta Utilities is ecstatic to receive approval on the sale of CenterPoint Louisiana’s natural gas systems from the Louisiana Public Service Commission, and we are eager to begin serving natural gas customers across our state after the transaction closes,” said Tim Poché, CEO of Delta Utilities. “This approval ensures that a reliable and affordable energy source is available to residents and businesses across Louisiana for years to come.”
Delta Utilities emphasized its commitment to maintaining reliable and affordable service. The company plans to operate under CenterPoint’s existing rate stabilization plan and tariffs, ensuring stable rates for customers. Local employees primarily working within CenterPoint’s Louisiana gas division will receive job offers from Delta Utilities, further ensuring continuity of service and support.
A Multi-State Expansion
This acquisition is part of Delta Utilities’ broader strategy to establish itself as a leading multi-state natural gas provider. The company is also seeking approval from the Mississippi Public Service Commission to acquire CenterPoint’s natural gas operations in Mississippi.
Additionally, Delta Utilities is moving forward with other acquisitions, including Entergy’s natural gas distribution operations in Louisiana. The LPSC approved Delta Utilities’ acquisition of Entergy’s Baton Rouge system in August 2024, and a pending application before the New Orleans City Council could further expand Delta Utilities’ footprint.
Economic Growth for Louisiana
When finalized, the combined acquisitions of CenterPoint and Entergy’s assets will make Delta Utilities a $1.7 billion enterprise, serving nearly 600,000 customers across the Gulf South. This positions Delta Utilities among the top 40 natural gas providers in the U.S. The company’s establishment of its headquarters in Louisiana and associated transition activities will drive millions of dollars in economic investment and create 200 new jobs across the state.
