Baton Rouge, LA – In a move to streamline operations and reduce costs, the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) announced that starting January 2025, it will no longer print and mail state sales tax return forms to registered businesses. This change is expected to save taxpayers over $100,000 annually in printing and mailing expenses.
The shift reflects the department’s commitment to leveraging digital tools for efficiency while maintaining accessibility for businesses. As part of the new approach, businesses will now have three options to file and pay state sales tax returns:
- Louisiana Taxpayer Access Point (LaTAP): This comprehensive online account management portal allows businesses to file returns, make payments, and view account history and activity. Access LaTAP at www.revenue.louisiana.gov/LaTAP.
- Parish E-File: A secure platform enabling the electronic filing of state, parish, and city sales and use tax returns. Businesses can also use Parish E-File to file multiple parish or city returns from one centralized site.
- Printable Forms: Businesses can download printed copies of state sales tax returns from www.revenue.louisiana.gov/Forms for manual submission.
Implications for Business Owners
The decision to eliminate printed and mailed tax returns reflects a growing trend among government agencies to adopt digital-first approaches. While the change is expected to cut costs and improve efficiency, businesses without reliable internet access or familiarity with digital tools may need to adapt quickly to the new process.
To ease the transition, LDR encourages businesses to familiarize themselves with the online filing platforms and ensure their accounts are up-to-date ahead of the January 2025 implementation. Resources and support for navigating these platforms are available on the LDR website.
A Step Toward Modernization
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to modernize government services, reduce operational costs, and promote environmental sustainability by decreasing paper use. It also provides businesses with faster and more secure methods for managing their tax obligations.
