SHREVEPORT, La. – LifeShare Blood Center is calling on Type O donors to give blood as supplies have dropped sharply during the summer months. The organization has launched a special campaign running Aug. 19–Sept. 9, 2025, offering a thank-you gift for eligible donors.
Summer typically brings a 20% decrease in donations, creating shortages for patients who rely on transfusions. Right now, LifeShare says the need for Type O blood is urgent.
Why Type O Blood Matters
O-positive is the most common blood type, found in about 39% of the population, and is compatible with more than 80% of patients with positive blood types. O-negative, considered the universal donor, can be transfused to any patient regardless of blood type. Hospitals depend heavily on both types, especially in trauma and emergency cases.
“Every time a Type O donor gives, they’re providing hope for patients who may not have another option,” said Mandi Johnson, LifeShare Director of Community Engagement. “We are so grateful for our Type O donors who step up for their community in times of need and we’re asking our O donors to donate now.”
Special Thank-You Gift
As part of the campaign, Type O donors who give blood or red cells at LifeShare centers or mobile drives during the promotion will receive a $25 eGift Card to a retailer of their choice.
The offer is available to donors in Louisiana, East Texas, and South Arkansas who are 18 or older and successfully complete a donation. Appointments are encouraged but not required.
Donors can schedule at www.lifeshare.org/give or call 800-256-5433. Gift cards will be distributed electronically within one week, and donors must have a valid email address on file. Additional terms and conditions apply.
