Baton Rouge, La. — The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has confirmed a winter weather-related death in Rapides Parish. A 65-year-old male succumbed to hypothermia, a condition confirmed by the coroner as directly linked to the recent extreme cold weather.
The LDH has issued an advisory urging residents to take precautions during extreme winter weather to prevent further tragedies. Below are essential safety tips shared by the department:
Hypothermia and Alcohol Risks
Alcohol consumption can significantly increase the risk of hypothermia by dilating blood vessels, which accelerates heat loss, and impairing the body’s natural heat-producing shivering response. Additionally, alcohol affects the brainstem, lowering core body temperature, and impairs judgment, potentially leading to risky behaviors such as insufficient clothing or delayed response to hypothermia symptoms like shivering or slurred speech.
Advice: Drink responsibly and limit outdoor exposure when temperatures are near or below freezing.
Generator Safety
Improper use of portable generators can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, a potentially fatal condition caused by the odorless, colorless gas emitted by gas-powered devices.
Generator Tips:
- Never use a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces like garages or basements.
- Place generators outside, at least 20 feet away from doors, windows, and vents.
- Do not refuel generators while they are hot or running.
- Keep generators dry and avoid using them in wet conditions.
Heating Safety
Improper heating methods can also pose risks such as carbon monoxide poisoning and fires.
Heating Tips:
- Service heating systems and ensure proper ventilation.
- Avoid using gas or electric ovens as a heating source.
- Never burn outdoor materials indoors, even in a fireplace.
- Install and maintain smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
Space Heater Safety
Space heaters are effective but must be used carefully to prevent fires or other hazards.
Space Heater Tips:
- Place the heater on the floor, away from water, and at least three feet from flammable items like curtains or furniture.
- Never leave a heater unattended.
- Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, not a surge protector.
Additional Recommendations
- Check on elderly neighbors and others who may be vulnerable during extreme weather.
- Protect outdoor pipes, bring plants and pets indoors, and take other necessary precautions to minimize winter storm risks.
