WASHINGTON, D.C. – Speaker of the House Mike Johnson confirmed Monday that House Republicans have received a formal rescissions request from the Trump Administration, seeking to eliminate $9.4 billion in federal spending identified as wasteful by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
“House Republicans will continue delivering on our mandate from the American people: to restore efficiency and accountability to the federal government,” said Speaker Johnson in a statement. “Today, we have officially received the rescissions request from the White House to eliminate $9.4 billion in wasteful foreign aid spending at the State Department, USAID, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS. The House will act quickly on this request.”
The proposed rescissions package includes $8.3 billion in foreign aid cuts and $1.1 billion in rescinded federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). According to Johnson, the package reflects findings from the DOGE initiative, which has been led by entrepreneur Elon Musk and his data analysis team.
“Under President Trump, every federal taxpayer dollar is actually being used to serve the American people, not to fund a bloated bureaucracy or purely partisan pet projects,” Johnson added. “We thank Elon Musk and his DOGE team for identifying a wide range of wasteful, duplicative, and outdated programs, and House Republicans are eager to eliminate them.”
The Trump Administration’s request utilizes the Impoundment Control Act (ICA), which allows the President to request the rescission of previously approved funds. Once submitted to Congress, the funds in question are temporarily frozen for up to 45 days while lawmakers consider the request. A simple majority vote in both chambers is required to approve the package.
Speaker Johnson emphasized that the rescissions package is just one part of a broader effort to streamline government spending and address what Republicans call excessive and misallocated funds.
“Democrats continue to wail and complain – not at the fraud, waste, and abuse – but at the Trump Administration simply for exposing it,” Johnson stated. “Democrats are the only ones in Washington who do not want to stop the egregious misspending of the people’s tax dollars. Republicans are delivering real accountability and real savings the American people demanded in November.”
The House is expected to bring the measure to the floor in the coming days.
