SHREVEPORT, La. – The Greater Shreveport Chamber is partnering with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to bring the National Civics Bee to Caddo Parish for the 2025–2026 program year. The competition, expanding nationwide in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, aims to encourage middle school students to strengthen their understanding of civics and community engagement.
The National Civics Bee invites students in grades six through eight to submit essays demonstrating civic knowledge and local problem-solving ideas. Top participants advance through regional, state, and national rounds, culminating in a national championship in Washington, D.C. Finalists will compete for cash prizes, national recognition, and a $100,000 education savings contribution. Each state’s first-place winner may also earn a $5,000 donation for their school, supported by the Fisher Global Foundation.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to help strengthen our community, we are delighted to partner with the U.S. Chamber to bring this exciting and innovative educational program to Caddo Parish,” said Dr. Tim Magner, president of the Greater Shreveport Chamber. “During our nation’s 250th anniversary we want to encourage all middle school students in Caddo Parish to showcase their civic knowledge and civic pride by participating in the National Civics Bee.”
Hilary Crow, vice president of civics at the U.S. Chamber Foundation, said the initiative offers a timely opportunity to reinvigorate civic learning. “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, we have a powerful opportunity – and responsibility – to reignite civic learning across the country,” Crow said. “Our hope is that the National Civics Bee inspires more schools to prioritize civics education, equipping young people with a deeper understanding of how our government and democracy work – and the essential role they play in strengthening their communities and our nation.”
