SHREVEPORT, La. – Environmental contaminants have been removed from more than 850,000 square feet of buildings at the former Libbey Glass manufacturing facility, clearing the way for full-scale demolition as North Louisiana Economic Partnership prepares the property for future industrial investment.
NLEP said its environmental consultant and demolition contractors completed the cleanup milestone at the I-20 Legacy Site, located at 4302 Jewella Ave. Limited demolition began in April while remediation was underway, and demolition work is expected to continue through mid-2027.
The next visible change will be the dismantling of the site’s silos along Jewella Avenue.
According to NLEP, approximately 95% of the steel, brick and concrete materials from the site are being recycled, reducing the amount of demolition debris sent to landfills.
The redevelopment is intended to return the former manufacturing property to productive use and strengthen the region’s ability to compete for industrial projects. The site offers interstate frontage, rail access and existing industrial-grade utility infrastructure.
“Economic development today is more competitive than ever,” said Justyn Dixon, president and CEO of NLEP. “Companies are making location decisions on accelerated timelines, and communities must be prepared before opportunities arise. By investing in site readiness now, we are positioning North Louisiana to compete for transformative projects that create well-paying jobs, attract capital investment, and strengthen our local tax base.”
Removing environmental contaminants and existing structures is intended to reduce development barriers and shorten project timelines for prospective employers. NLEP expects the property to support industrial recruitment, business expansion and long-term job creation.
The announcement concerns site preparation and does not identify a future tenant or provide investment or employment commitments.
“The work being completed at the I-20 Legacy Site is about more than demolition,” Dixon said. “It is about creating opportunity. Every step toward site readiness increases our ability to attract new industry, support existing businesses, and build a stronger economic future for the region.”
NLEP credited support from Gov. Jeff Landry, Senate President Cameron Henry, House Speaker Phillip DeVillier, the Northwest Legislative Delegation, the Northwest Louisiana Finance Authority, Caddo Parish, the City of Shreveport and Delta Resource Group for making the project possible.
