SHREVEPORT, La. — With June recognized as Men’s Health Month, CHRISTUS Health is encouraging men across the region to take their health seriously by scheduling routine screenings and annual checkups.
Men face several common health concerns, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, prostate cancer, depression, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 13.2% of men aged 18 and older report being in fair or poor health.
Dr. David Aziz, an internal medicine specialist with CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Bossier City, recommends annual health checkups starting at age 45, or earlier for those with a family history of chronic or serious conditions.
“Routine health screenings are vital, yet many men tend to postpone them,” said Dr. Aziz. “Seeing a doctor regularly can catch issues early when treatment works best.”
Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death among men, with contributing risk factors including smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and family history.
Routine cancer screenings are especially critical for men over 45, as recent medical guidelines point to a rise in cancer cases among younger adults.
“Many men tend to delay routine health screenings, yet these exams are essential for detecting issues early and improving long-term health outcomes,” added Dr. Christopher Snead, an oncologist and hematologist at CHRISTUS Highland Medical Center. “Consistent checkups help catch potential problems at a stage when treatment is most effective.”
Both doctors emphasize that taking charge of your health is a proactive step toward longevity. Prioritizing preventive care not only supports early detection and treatment but also leads to better quality of life in the long run.
