October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and CHRISTUS Health is emphasizing the importance of mammograms, which can lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, earlier treatments and increased survival rates.
“Mammograms continue to be the most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early,” said Dr. Deepika Ralla, medical oncologist with the CHRISTUS Cancer Center in Shreveport and Bossier City. “When diagnosed in its early stages, survival increases significantly. That is why it’s so important for women to prioritize this potentially life-saving screening.”
Breast cancer accounts for about 30% of all new female cancers each year, with more than 300,000 new cases estimated this year, according to the American Cancer Society.
CHRISTUS Breast Center in Shreveport and CHRISTUS St. Michael Imaging Center in Texarkana both accept self-referrals for annual screening mammograms. Extended hours, including evening and weekend appointments, are available only at the CHRISTUS Breast Center and the CHRISTUS Bossier Emergency Hospital.
“Advocating for your health starts with being proactive,” said Dr. Daphanie Taylor, medical oncologist at the CHRISTUS St. Michael W. Temple Webber Cancer Center in Texarkana. “If you have a family history or concerns, don’t wait. Talk to your provider and get screened. It could save your life.”
Women ages 40-74 who are at average risk of breast cancer are encouraged to get a mammogram once a year, depending on their personal risk factors and in consultation with their health care provider.
Screenings may need to begin earlier for women with a family history or genetic predisposition.
Throughout October, CHRISTUS Health facilities across the region will also be hosting educational events, pink-out days and mobile mammography units to increase awareness and reach underserved communities.
“We want to remind women that a mammogram only takes about 20 minutes, but it could add years to your life,” Taylor said.
