SHREVEPORT, La. – As American Heart Month begins, CHRISTUS Health is placing a spotlight on heart health, emphasizing the importance of screenings, preventive care, and lifestyle choices to combat heart disease, the leading cause of death for adults in the U.S.
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease claims approximately 630,000 American lives each year. The term encompasses various conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and heart rhythm disorders.
Early Screenings and Preventive Care
Prevention is a primary focus in the fight against heart disease. Dr. Theresa Rinderle, a primary care physician with CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic, stresses the significance of early screenings.
“Screenings for hypertension should start as early as age 18, and cholesterol screenings are recommended beginning at age 30,” Rinderle explained.
She highlighted that engaging in regular physical activity is one of the most effective preventive measures.
“Exercise is important in keeping your heart healthy. Doing some sort of exercise for at least 30 minutes, five times a week—such as walking, swimming, weightlifting, or cycling—can be a game-changer,” she added.
Healthy Habits for a Strong Heart
Dr. John Evans, a cardiovascular surgeon, underscores the role of diet and lifestyle in maintaining heart health, particularly for individuals with a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
“It’s especially important for those with genetic predispositions to adopt heart-healthy habits early on,” Evans said.
Dr. Timothy Danish, another cardiovascular surgeon, pointed out that heart disease symptoms can manifest differently in men and women.
“For some women, signs of heart disease include heart attack symptoms, fluttering feelings in the chest, shortness of breath, sudden fatigue, or swelling in the lower extremities,” Danish noted.
The Role of Primary Care in Heart Health
Danish also emphasized the importance of having a primary care physician who understands an individual’s medical history and can recommend necessary interventions.
“Care can range from simple screenings and minimally invasive procedures to more complex, invasive treatments,” he said.
CHRISTUS Health encourages individuals to assess their heart health and explore preventive care options. Those interested in learning more can visit www.christushealth.org for additional resources.
