In recognition of National Diabetes Awareness Month, CHRISTUS Health is highlighting the importance of diabetes education, early detection and ongoing support for individuals living with the condition, which affects nearly 39 million Americans.
“Diabetes affects each person differently,” said Alana Day, nurse practitioner at CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Texarkana. “Even with strong commitment, managing blood sugar can be difficult. That’s why individualized care, compassion and education are essential.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 16 percent of Americans are living with diabetes, and nearly one in four are unaware of their condition. The American Diabetes Association estimates that the disease carries an annual economic cost of more than $412 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity.
Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases. The condition develops when the body does not use insulin effectively or fails to produce enough of it.
“Managing diabetes is about more than numbers. It’s about understanding your body and making informed choices every day,” said Lisa Stansbury, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Shreveport. “With the right support and education, patients can feel empowered to take control of their health and live well with diabetes.”
CHRISTUS Health encourages individuals to take preventive measures and manage their health through early screening and healthy lifestyle habits. Recommendations include:
- Get screened early: Adults over 35 should be screened every three years, particularly if they have risk factors such as obesity or family history.
- Eat balanced meals: Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables and healthy fats.
- Stay active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
- Monitor your numbers: Regular blood sugar checks can help detect issues early.
- Seek support: Connect with an educator or support group to develop a personalized care plan.
