June 1 highlights the power of support and community resources
SHREVEPORT, LA — In recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day, CHRISTUS Health is honoring the strength, courage, and ongoing journey of individuals who have faced a cancer diagnosis. Observed annually on the first Sunday in June, the day serves as a time to celebrate life, reflect on the survivorship path, and highlight the importance of continued support beyond treatment.
According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 18.1 million cancer survivors were living in the United States as of January 2022. That number is expected to rise to 26 million by 2040, a testament to both medical advances and the enduring spirit of survivors.
While the symbolic ringing of the bell at the end of treatment is a powerful milestone, many survivors continue to experience long-term challenges—ranging from physical fatigue to emotional hurdles like anxiety, depression, and fear of recurrence.
“Survivorship doesn’t end when treatment does,” said Brittany Whittington, program manager and social worker at the CHRISTUS Cancer Center in Shreveport. “Support groups offer a safe space for survivors to share their experiences, find encouragement, and learn coping strategies from others who truly understand.”
To help meet those needs, the CHRISTUS Cancer Center offers a range of support groups tailored to the diverse experiences of patients, survivors, and their families. These groups foster community, connection, and healing, ensuring no one walks the cancer journey alone.
Survivors and family members are encouraged to speak with their care team to find a group that fits their specific needs. Whether someone is newly diagnosed or years into survivorship, resources and compassionate support remain available.
