SHREVEPORT, La. – May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and CHRISTUS Health is encouraging individuals to take a closer look at hidden sources of stress and adopt healthy coping strategies that support emotional well-being.
While financial challenges and workplace demands are well-known stressors, subtle triggers—such as disorganized or cluttered spaces—can also have a significant impact on mental health.
“Many people don’t realize that being surrounded by clutter can make it harder to focus, decrease work efficiency, increase anxiety levels, and leave you feeling overwhelmed,” said Dr. Edward Johnson, a family medicine physician at CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Shreveport-Bossier. “It can be an exhausting cycle. Cleaning up and organizing your space can make a big difference in how you feel inwardly and outwardly.”
Dr. Johnson emphasized that physicians can play an important role in helping patients identify and manage stress by creating personalized treatment plans that address emotional and physical health.
“Taking action early gives people a better chance of managing stress before it gets worse,” he added. “It also helps them build healthy habits and make positive changes.”
He recommends starting small—beginning with organizing one room or workspace—and reaching out to a primary care provider if feelings of stress or overwhelm persist.
“Reducing visual clutter helps people feel more in control,” said Dr. Johnson. “If you’re feeling stuck or constantly anxious, your doctor can help you break the cycle.”
