SHREVEPORT, La. — As part of Women’s Health Month, CHRISTUS Health is drawing attention to the renewed role of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in women’s health care—encouraging education, empowerment, and evidence-based treatment options for women navigating menopause.
Backed by recent research, HRT has shown to reduce hot flashes, night sweats, and mood disturbances in up to 80% of menopausal women. In addition to managing symptoms, it can prevent osteoporosis and may reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes and colon cancer.
“It’s important for women to have reliable, current information about their health care choices,” said Dr. Monique Spears, a family medicine physician for CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Shreveport-Bossier. “Hormone therapy has advanced significantly, and when used correctly, it can make a meaningful difference in many women’s lives.”
According to the Women’s Health Initiative, when HRT is started before age 60 or within 10 years of menopause, it has been associated with lower all-cause mortality and no increased risk of breast cancer or cardiovascular death.
“Women’s Health Month goes beyond awareness. It’s an opportunity to take real, impactful action,” Spears added. “We’re proud to lead the way in providing compassionate, evidence-based care that supports women at every stage of life.”
For women who are unable or choose not to use hormone therapy, nonhormonal treatments are also available and can be effective in managing symptoms. CHRISTUS encourages women to schedule a visit with a primary care provider to explore the best options tailored to their unique needs.
