SHREVEPORT, LA — As a potential winter storm approaches early next week, Caddo Parish Sheriff Henry Whitehorn, Sr. is urging residents to take precautions and check on elderly neighbors, who are particularly vulnerable during cold weather.
“Winter weather is especially tough on our senior citizens,” Sheriff Whitehorn emphasized. “Stay in touch with elderly neighbors, especially those who live alone or have disabilities.”
Cold weather significantly increases the risk of hypothermia, a potentially life-threatening condition. Symptoms include confusion, fatigue, shivering, and numbness. Sheriff Whitehorn and the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) recommend the following safety measures for seniors:
Cold Weather Safety Tips for Seniors
- Stay warm: Wear a hat or scarf to protect your head, ears, hands, and feet.
- Dress in layers: Layering helps insulate against the cold. Wet clothes should be changed immediately.
- Avoid alcohol: Alcohol increases the risk of hypothermia. Seek medical help if hypothermia is suspected.
Indoor Safety Tips
- Ensure fuel-burning appliances are well-ventilated and inspected to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Use electric heaters cautiously to avoid shock or fire hazards.
- Keep flammable materials at least three feet away from heat sources.
- Only use heating equipment approved for indoor use.
Pet Safety Tips
Sheriff Whitehorn also reminds residents to care for pets during freezing temperatures:
- Provide warm, sheltered areas.
- Keep antifreeze and other poisonous substances out of reach.
- Bang on your car’s hood before starting the engine to ensure no animals are hiding beneath.
The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office will monitor weather conditions closely and share updates through their Facebook and Instagram pages. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for potential emergencies.
