Louisiana ranks as the most stressed state in the U.S., driven by high levels of financial strain, health challenges and workplace pressures, according to a 2026 analysis by WalletHub.
The report evaluated all 50 states across 40 indicators, including employment conditions, income stability, mental health and public safety. Louisiana received the highest overall stress score at 62.86, placing it ahead of Kentucky and New Mexico.
The state ranked first in work-related stress and third in money-related stress, reflecting persistent economic challenges. It also ranked second in health and safety-related stress and sixth in family-related stress.
Economic and Health Pressures Drive Rankings
WalletHub’s analysis points to several underlying factors contributing to Louisiana’s ranking. The state has the highest poverty rate in the nation, while approximately 16% of residents reported skipping medical care due to cost.
Louisiana also ranks among the 10 worst states for the share of adults reporting poor mental health and for depression diagnoses. Limited access to mental health professionals further compounds these issues, with fewer psychologists per capita than most states.
Employment conditions also contribute to elevated stress levels. The state recorded the eighth-highest unemployment rate nationally and ranked last in job security.
Broader Regional Trends
Southern states dominate the top of the stress rankings, with Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama all appearing in the top 10. Tennessee ranked 11th.
By contrast, states with stronger economic conditions and healthcare access, such as South Dakota, Utah and Minnesota, ranked among the least stressed.
Work and Lifestyle Indicators
The study found Louisiana tied for the second-highest average hours worked per week and ranked fourth for the fewest hours of sleep per night, both contributing to higher stress levels.
Nationally, broader stress factors include concerns about the economy, work demands and social disconnection. Nearly 70% of U.S. adults reported needing more emotional support than they received in the past year.
Methodology
WalletHub’s rankings are based on four categories: work-related stress, money-related stress, family-related stress, and health and safety-related stress. Data was compiled from federal agencies and research organizations, including the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The findings highlight ongoing structural challenges in Louisiana tied to income levels, healthcare access and employment stability, all of which continue to influence overall quality of life.
