Baton Rouge, LA — Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming has voiced strong support for President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order designed to end discriminatory debanking practices nationwide.
“Discriminating against individuals or organizations based on their political or religious beliefs has no place in our financial system,” Treasurer Fleming said. “President Trump’s executive action is a vital and overdue correction to the politicization of banking, and I stand proudly with my colleagues in supporting this necessary step toward restoring fairness and neutrality.”
The order has drawn support from the State Financial Officers Foundation (SFOF), where 32 state financial officers, including Treasurer Fleming, signed a joint statement backing the move. The group condemned the use of “reputational risk” as a regulatory justification for restricting services to certain individuals or organizations.
For years, critics have argued that federal regulators pressured financial institutions to cut off services to law-abiding Americans and businesses because of their viewpoints. Fleming said this amounts to a serious threat to financial liberty and constitutional rights.
“No American should fear losing their bank account or financial standing because of what they believe,” Fleming said. “This executive order makes clear that access to financial services must be governed by objective criteria, not ideological litmus tests.”
The order requires financial institutions to evaluate customers based on legitimate financial considerations and directs federal agencies to avoid coercive practices that politicize oversight. It also calls for accountability and a renewed commitment to neutrality in financial regulation.
Fleming encouraged both Congress and Louisiana lawmakers to advance legislation that strengthens these protections at the federal and state levels.
“This is about standing up for the principles of fairness, freedom, and equal treatment under the law,” Fleming said. “In Louisiana, our department will continue to work with legislators to protect our citizens from politically motivated financial targeting. Discriminatory debanking must end.”
