WASHINGTON, D.C. — Speaker of the House Mike Johnson appeared this week on Fox News’s America Reports to discuss the sweeping impact of the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a legislative package he says represents the largest cost savings initiative in government history. Johnson also addressed concerns about the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) projections and highlighted ongoing efforts in the House to codify cost-cutting reforms discovered by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Historic Savings Through Strategic Reform
During the interview, Speaker Johnson urged the U.S. Senate to preserve the integrity of the bill as it moves through their chamber.
“We have a very delicate balance we’ve maintained in the House,” Johnson said. “This bill will save over $1.5 trillion in spending. That’s the largest amount of savings in the history of government on planet Earth.”
Johnson emphasized that the national debt crisis cannot be solved overnight, but this legislation marks a turning point in congressional efforts to reverse runaway spending.
Criticism of CBO Estimates
The Speaker also took aim at the CBO’s analysis of the bill, stating that its methodology fails to consider the real-world impact of pro-growth policies.
“They don’t use dynamic scoring. That means they don’t give credit for the economic growth this bill will generate,” he said. “Lower taxes, fewer regulations—this will do what the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act did in 2017, but on steroids.”
Johnson argued that the CBO has a track record of underestimating growth, noting a $1 trillion miscalculation during the Trump administration’s tax cuts. He added that current estimates ignore revenue from tariffs and other key economic drivers.
Codifying DOGE’s Success
A major element of the bill is the formal adoption of cost-savings identified through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a data-driven initiative led by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. Johnson praised Musk’s role in uncovering hidden inefficiencies and fraud using advanced algorithms.
“Elon cracked the code,” Johnson said. “His efforts revealed things hidden from Congress for years. This changes the way government operates.”
Johnson noted bipartisan support for reducing waste and said that institutionalizing DOGE’s methods will create a more transparent and accountable government.
“Oversight is now a permanent part of this system, and that’s exciting,” he said.
