SHREVEPORT, La. – In recognition of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, CHRISTUS Health is emphasizing the benefits of regular physical activity and sports participation for individuals of all ages and abilities.
“Engaging in regular physical activity helps prevent chronic diseases, enhances mental health and promotes overall well-being,” said Alan Edwards, supervisor of athletic training at CHRISTUS Shreveport-Bossier Health System. “It’s not just about appearance, it’s about feeling good and leading a healthier, happier life.”
The monthlong observance serves as a reminder that physical fitness encompasses more than just physical health—it includes mental well-being, quality of life, and community engagement. Sports participation, Edwards added, brings valuable life skills along with physical benefits.
“Sports participation builds teamwork, leadership and social bonds—all of which are vital for mental and emotional well-being,” he said.
The role of sports medicine is also crucial. CHRISTUS athletic trainers and medical professionals support individuals in recovery, performance enhancement, and injury prevention. “Our goal is to help athletes perform at their peak while reducing the risk of injury,” Edwards said.
CHRISTUS Health encourages the community to embrace fitness as a lifestyle—whether through morning jogs, joining a sports league, or simply increasing daily movement. The goal is to “push boundaries and build healthier communities.”
